Reno Improv is Northern Nevadaโ€™s only theater dedicated to performing, teaching and celebrating the art of improv comedy. As an educational nonprofit, we are devoted to creating and maintaining a safe, welcoming community where performers of all experience levels can hone their craft and play an active role in the comedy scene in Reno. From introductory and advanced musical improv classes to weekly drop-in workshops and performances, there are many ways to be part of the Reno Improv community.

Beat burnout

In adulthood, it can be challenging to make time for play and human connection. We can find ourselves in a cycle of cognitive burnout that leaves us feeling simultaneously overstimulated and completely drained. After consuming an endless stream of digital noise, we desperately crave real-world interactions and play.

Improv comedy exercises allow participants to improve their speaking and listening skills, collaborate and connect with others, and improve self-confidence in a fun, low-pressure environment. In this art form, mistakes are treated as gifts and a cause for celebration. Above all else, improv encourages (and rewards) curiosity.

If youโ€™ve been experiencing burnout, the solution may be improv comedy training.

Reclaiming the art of play

โ€œEverything in daily adult life is so serious, but signing up for classes at Reno Improv helped me be a kid again and find a group of like-minded adults who were in search of the same thing,โ€ says Monique Vieras, local business owner and musician. Folks like Monique are part of a growing community of people of all backgrounds rediscovering play at Reno Improv.

โ€œDespite what some assume, improv classes arenโ€™t designed to teach you how to be funny or craft a joke,โ€ says Tim Mahoney, performer and instructor at Reno Improv. โ€œInstead, they operate more like a gym for mindfulness, silliness and genuine human connection. The result of that just happens to be some amazing things. Sometimes itโ€™s a spontaneous moment that takes you somewhere else; sometimes itโ€™s a lifelong friend or partner, and sometimes itโ€™s simply a funny improv show.

โ€œOne of the very first concepts you learn is โ€˜Yes, And,โ€™โ€ continues Mahoney. โ€œBut itโ€™s so much more than saying yes. Itโ€™s about accepting the reality your scene partner established and exploring that idea by building on it and watching it grow. For me, it is the one of the most collaborative art forms there is. It takes confidence, but that confidence comes from the support of the team and the community at large pushing you to do the thing, to commit, and to be fully present.โ€

A judgment-free zone

The appeal of improv comedy lies in its humanity and its connection to something real, yet ephemeral. In classes, workshops and performances, there are no metrics, no performance reviews, and no wrong answers. Mistakes arenโ€™t failures; theyโ€™re treated as opportunities for exploration and discovery.

There are many benefits to improv classes. Structured play for adults decreases stress, sharpens active listening skills, and builds deep social bonds. Because improv requires total concentration in the present moment, it promotes a state of mindfulness. Tomorrowโ€™s presentation has to wait when youโ€™re actively creating a spontaneous scene about detectives, dragons, or whatever the collective consciousness comes up with.

The joys and benefits of improv are different for every person who comes through our door, but the community aspect is what keeps people coming back. Participants range from tech transplants and teachers to college students and entrepreneurs. It bridges the gap between Renoโ€™s diverse populations, creating an authentic social network that doesnโ€™t rely on coffee meetings or business cards.

Get involved!

If the thought of jumping straight into a multi-week class gives you pause, Reno Improv offers a low-stakes alternative to experience the energy firsthand. The Playground is a no-experience-necessary, all-experience-welcome weekly workshop that introduces the basics of improv. The workshop happens every Saturday at 6 p.m. and costs $6.

Not interested in being onstage? Every weekend, the theater hosts affordable live shows featuring local improv teams that take simple audience suggestions and spin them into entirely unscripted comedy magic. Catching a weekend performance like The Bargain Bin Improv Show, with a $1 ticket price, or Biggest Little Broadway, a fully improvised Broadway-style musical, lets you see the theaterโ€™s artistic philosophy in action while enjoying a night out.

Whether youโ€™re looking to sharpen your presentation skills, conquer social anxiety, or connect with new people, the solution might just be waiting for you at the corner of Wells Avenue and Willow Street. No experience is requiredโ€”just a willingness to show up, say “yes,” and see what happens next.
