Nevada Pride Month LGBTQ+ and Friends Social Lunch: Saturday, June 6, 2 to 5 p.m.

Join LGBTQ+ folks and friends from Reno/Sparks to Gardnerville/Minden and everywhere in between. Enjoy a fabulous afternoon of food, conversation and community from 2 to 5 p.m., Saturday, June 6, at Redโ€™s Old 395 Grill, at 1055 S. Carson St., Carson City.

The Socials provide a fun, safe environment to meet other local LGBTQ+ folks and our friends. There are no agendasโ€”no speakers. Everyone is welcome.

Know that most everyone has some awkward and anxious feelings as they walk through the door. Those first few moments will melt away. You will know you are in the right place. You are not alone.

Take me to the river

The special events season gets under way with the return of the Reno River Festival this weekend. The three-day event features guided whitewater rafting tours, a coed softball tournament, an 18-hole bucket golf course, yoga sessions and kickboxing classes, as well as carnival rides, a rubber duck scavenger hunt, food and craft vendors, and dog-focused activities in the Bark Park. There will also be live performances by local, regional and national acts on two stages throughout the day, including closing sets by headliners The Calling on May 29, Everclear on May 30 and As If! on May 31. Festival hours are 1 to 9 p.m., Friday, May 29; 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday, May 30; and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Sunday, May 31, at Idlewild Park, 2055 Idlewild Drive. Prices start at $15 for a three-day pass. Kids age 17 and younger and dogs get in for free. Additional fees apply for tournaments, rafting tours, drink tours and other add-on experiences. Animals and astronomy combine for an evening of family fun this weekend. Animal Ark Wildlife Sanctuary will kick off its Summer Stargazing Series featuring guests from the University of Nevada, Renoโ€™s Fleischmann Planetarium, who will offer telescope-assisted viewing of constellations, deep sky objects and other celestial phenomena. The ticket includes daytime admission to Animal Ark on the same date. The stargazing events will take place in the amphitheater from 9 to 10:30 p.m., Friday, May 29, June 26, July 24 and Aug. 14 at Animal Ark, 1265 Deerlodge Road, located about 25 miles north of Reno. Admission is $40 for adults and $20 for children ages 6-12. Attendance is limited, and advance ticket purchase is required. Tickets are available at www.animalark.org/special-events.



Be a sport

Thousands of athletes and fitness celebrities will gather in downtown Reno this weekend for the Legion Sports Fest. The indoor/outdoor, multi-venue event will feature the IFBB Pro League and NPC bodybuilding contest; competitions in a variety of sports including arm-wrestling, grappling, Muay Thai, roller derby and sumo wrestling; and an expo with hundreds of fitness and nutrition vendors. While the Reno Ballroom anchors the expo and bodybuilding competition, the Reno Events Center will host eight live sports under one roof. Attendees with a free expo entry ticket will have access to the fitness expo and outdoor entertainment space, which includes the Strongman competition, Globe of Death motorcycle stunt show, and food truck area located along East Fourth Street, between Virginia Street and University Way. The bodybuilding contest and various sport bouts are separate ticketed events. The Legion Sports Fest opens at 9 a.m., Saturday, May 30, at the Reno Events Center and Reno Ballroom, 400-401 University Way. Celebrate cultural diversity at two events taking place this weekend. The Asian Community Development Council and One APIA Nevada mark Asian American Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month with their annual festival featuring performances, presentations, food-truck vendors and more. Hit the trails

Sky Tavern celebrates the opening day of its bike park at its May Day Festival this weekend. The third annual outdoor fest features bike demos, workshops, group rides, vendors, food trucks, yoga, a zip line from Project Discovery and live music. The event takes place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, May 30, at Sky Tavern, 21130 Mount Rose Highway. General admission tickets are $30, but do not include shuttle access. Entry is free for kids age 12 and younger. An all-mountain access membership or June Explorer membership is required to ride the shuttle. Explore the history of aviation at The Discoveryโ€™s latest attraction, Above and Beyondโ€”The Ultimate Interactive Flight Exhibition. Through immersive simulations, interactive design challenges, iconic historical touchstones, visionary concepts for the future and inspiring stories from aviation innovators, this exhibition celebrates the power of innovation to make dreams take flight. Above and Beyond opens on Saturday, May 30, at the Terry Lee Wells Nevada Discovery Museum (The Discovery), 490 S. Center St., Museum admission is $11-$16. Up to the challenge

People with disabilities can enjoy a day of recreation and physical activity using a variety of adaptive equipment at the 21st Annual Mark Wellman Adventure Day and Abilities Expo. Named after Paralympian and motivational speaker Mark Wellman, the event offers adaptive activities like hand-cycling, kayaking and rock-wall climbing using specialized equipment and opportunities to connect with community organizations including Arts for All Nevada, Nevada Center for Excellence in Disabilities, and Nevada Disability Advocacy and Law Center. The free event is open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Sunday, May 31, at Sparks Marina Park, 300 Howard Drive, Sparks. New Wave Crave.

The Lazy 5 Summer Music Series returns for its 21st season with a variety of local and regional artists in genres ranging from classic rock to funk and soul. The free concert series opens with country music group Greg Austin and Southern Justice on June 3, followed by White Water on June 10, New Wave Crave on June 17 and Deep Ellum on June 24, with other acts playing throughout the summer. Bring lawn chairs and blankets; enjoy drinks from On Tap Mobile Pub and a rotating selection of food options available each week.
