There is no need to go to the theater to see Jackass: Best and Last, the latest and supposedly last film for the Jackass franchise—unless you feel like throwing the Jackass boys a few bones for all of the bones they have fractured and pulverized over the years.
This is basically a greatest-hits clips movie with a few new stunts thrown in for good measure. This is a grand example of something that should’ve been sent straight to streaming.
After the near-masterpiece that was Jackass Forever (All hail Johnny Knoxville for that one!), this follow-up feels like a party that’s gone on a bit too long. That said, there’s no denying that the greatest-hits clips—featuring Knoxville and friends riding rockets, getting hit by bulls and shooting themselves—are still a blast to watch.
As I sit here trying to remember what I just saw a mere few hours ago, it’s hard to remember many truly distinguishable new moments. There’s a new robotic cast member giving Steve-O a scary prostate exam that is sort of funny, and there’s a lot of sitting around and reminiscing.
The film’s best footage is actually unseen clips from years ago. Bam Margera is a semi-substantial presence through clips, including one that shows his participation in the “Silence of the Lambs” dark room experience (involving a rattlesnake!) from Forever. (He was fired from Forever, and isn’t an active participant in any of the new stuff.)
There’s also a previously unaired escaped-convict stunt—Knoxville performed it for the original TV series—that is worthy viewing. It’s fun seeing the young Knoxville trying to explain himself to police.
Ultimately, this feels like something better suited to Paramount+ than a big theater. If you have never seen a Jackass movie, this could be a good place to start—but fans will probably consider Jackass Forever the true swan song for the original cast.
