Letโ€™s start with the background of Bohemian Burlesque.

Bohemian Burlesque has been around for about 10 years. โ€ฆ It was created in 2006 by Chelsea Stone.

How did you get involved?

I went to a show. Just like everybody else who we find comes to shows in extreme costumesโ€”theyโ€™re going to join us. You dress for the job you want. My sister and I dressed up. I hadnโ€™t been on stage for a while, and I just wanted to express myself in that way again. When youโ€™re a professional dancer or youโ€™re in theater, youโ€™re doing somebody elseโ€™s work. Burlesque is a very different cat.

Because youโ€™re doing your own choreography?

Youโ€™re doing everything. With Nerdlesque, weโ€™re adopting popular characters and stories and putting our own spin on it. โ€ฆ Strippers and other people in the sex industryโ€”if youโ€™re a sex worker, youโ€™re getting paid to fulfill somebody elseโ€™s fantasy, but as a burlesque dancer, youโ€™re showing and creating your own fantasies. So, thereโ€™s a lot of ownership in that expression. โ€ฆ My goal is that I want to get up there and I want to make people laugh and be entertained and forget about everything thatโ€™s going on outside.

Whatโ€™s Nerdlesque?

Well, we thought it would be funny to do a Nerdlesque show. Itโ€™s a bit cheeky. We were saying, nerdy stuff and sexy things! Or nerdy things and sexy stuff! Just a tongue-in-cheek thing.

Whatโ€™s your role?

The last couple of years, Iโ€™ve taken on the role of MC. โ€ฆ Iโ€™m co-MC-ing with my show husband, Michael Polanski.

Are you also dancing?

Iโ€™m doing two acts and the finale number. โ€ฆ People in Reno are like, Nerdlesque? Wow! You guys are geniuses for thinking of that. Nobodyโ€™s ever done anything like that! I heard about Nerdlesque shows in, like, 2007 up in Seattle, which is kind of a mecca for burlesque. Theyโ€™re doing very specific shows nowโ€”like He-Man and She-Ra and X-Men, just X-Men themed. So itโ€™s kind of this blanket. Weโ€™re going to have a broad amount of things. Thereโ€™s going to be something for everybody. If you donโ€™t get every single reference or character, you can at least appreciate the aesthetic and what the performer is putting into the act.

What are some of the acts?

We have a girl whoโ€™s a pretty big Trekkie and sheโ€™s coming up against people who are like, no, Star Wars is better! So thereโ€™s going to be Star WarsStar Trek duel. Iโ€™m going into fandom a little bit. Iโ€™m going to do a My Little Pony act. At one of our cast parties, we watchedโ€”I canโ€™t remember the name of itโ€”but itโ€™s a porno and they all have ponytails. We were excited, so itโ€™s a little bit of that. Plus, I love finding things from my childhood that I can just obliterate. โ€ฆ And thereโ€™s another where one of our longtime members, Sharon [Ruff], is doing a scorned Pluto, because Pluto was really upset about getting kicked out of the league of planets.

What makes a good burlesque performance?

Being passionate about what youโ€™re doing, engaging with the audience. What makes a good performance? You want a connection with the audience, you want to be interested in the subject material, and how itโ€™s presented. And in burlesque, thereโ€™s a bonus, because sometimes you get titties at the end.
