The state is offering residents up to $1,000 to make their homes more energy efficient. The Nevada Home Energy Fitness Campaign kicked off last week. The 10-year program is designed to improve energy conservation in 10,000 homes in Northern Nevada and 40,000 homes in Southern Nevada. Its specific goal: increase energy efficiency by at least 20 percent in at least 5 percent of all single family homes by 2021.

A $5 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy will get the program underway for three years.

Participants will get a home energy audit to find air leaks and other recommended upgrades. Once the upgrades are made, theyโ€™ll get a second audit to ensure theyโ€™ve met the 20 percent threshold for energy savings. Then theyโ€™ll receive a 20 percent rebate of up to $1,000 on their initial investment.
