Twice a year, High Desert Journal gathers some of the Western desertโs best writers and artists and places selections of their work on its big, sturdy pages, making it the kind of literary journal one is happy to disappear inside. The journal is involved in that neverending struggle to capture, as Charles Bowden writes in its pages, โwhat exists within that place we call desert.โ The words and images are laid bare, giving a sense of space and earthiness that reflects the surroundings. A bison crosses a highway, a cancer grows from a โyella cakeโ of uranium, a true buckaroo speaks of life on the ranch, and Renoโs J. Anne Lazarus somehow makes salt, jello and road kill eloquent things. Published biannually in April and October.
