Amee Chapman is a Northern California native steeped in the roots of American music. Her self-released third release, Still Life, is a collection of beautiful, intimate sketches that tell tales of the lonely and wounded. These songsโ€”co-written with Nichole Robbins and backed by a bevy of San Francisco musicians, including Mother Hipsโ€™ John Hofer and vocalist Jolie Hollandโ€”showcase Chapmanโ€™s versatile songwriting vision. She moves from the country waltz of โ€œSoftest Spotsโ€ and the quiet violin melodies of โ€œSeaward Jackโ€ to the Sheryl Crow sounds of โ€œTattoo Cowboy.โ€ But itโ€™s songs like โ€œStill Life of a Manโ€โ€”with its subtly abrasive, ambient Wilco-esque backgroundโ€”and the simple, Mazzy Star-styled guitar lines of โ€œWishing Wellโ€ that show Chapmanโ€™s willingness to break from the traditional folksinger mold.
