Probably not; effective city government seems to be a prerequisite for such a prestigious title. But Reno certainly has some elements that place it among the worldโ€™s best urban locations. Look at the amazing natural wonders we have around us: mountains, lakes, deserts, forests, rivers โ€ฆ you name it, weโ€™ve got it. When it comes to entertainment, Reno is second to none, with its glitzy casino shows, thriving theater community and televised government-body meetings on SNCAT. Heck, how many cities this size have three different comedy clubs of such prestige? And the restaurants โ€ฆ few urban areas of any size are blessed with the variety and quality of dining establishments that call Reno home.

So, Reno may not be the best city in the world (although itโ€™s a shoo-in as the worldโ€™s biggest little city). But itโ€™s still pretty damn good. Throw in the communities of Sparks, Carson City, Minden, Gardnerville, Fernley andโ€”last, but not leastโ€”the Tahoe-area municipalities, and this area has some wonderful places to call home.

Celebrating this wonderfulness is what this issue is all about. Many of our awesome readers took the time to complete ballots and tell us what they feel is the best Northern Nevada has to offer; the results are in this issue. To fill out things, the RN&R editorial staff is handing out some kudos as well. Finally, to celebrate our fifth anniversary (and our fifth โ€œBest ofโ€ issue), the RN&R is spotlighting nine perennial winners of our โ€œBest ofโ€ readersโ€™ choices; these are businesses or people who have earned a place in our communityโ€™s hearts.

You know, although Reno may not be the best city in the world, it probably isnโ€™t much of a stretch to say that Northern Nevada may well be the best area in the world.

Welcome to the RN&Rโ€™s Best of Reno 2000. Enjoy.
