Ethan Hawke stars as a vampire scientist living in a world where
humans have become an endangered species and are farmed for their
blood. Directed by the Spierig Brothers, the movie has a decent look to
it, and some of the sequences are genuinely scary and appropriately
disgusting. But it sort of loses its way, and by the time it’s
over, it feels as like something you’ve seen before. Willem Dafoe
makes a welcomed appearance as a former vampire turned vampire hunter,
while Sam Neill is a bit tiresome as the film’s bad guy. The
movie tries to create original vampire lore, but vampires have been so
done-to-death lately that it all seems like a rehash. Too bad, because
I did like Hawke in the lead role, and Dafoe looks pretty cool sporting
a crossbow.
