Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet reunite for another disaster movie, and this time the sinking vessel is the crumbling marriage of Frank and April Wheeler. The film, based in 1955, tries to show us that folks were just as dysfunctional—perhaps more so—50 years ago. DiCaprio and Winslet tear into each other with a ferocity that is downright alarming at times. Those hoping for a moving love story thanks to the misleading commercials for this film are going to be surprised. It’s an emotional bloodbath, and nobody uncorks the hate like DiCaprio. The man is just possessed in this movie. Winslet is great here, but there are actually moments where she is outmatched. Directed by Sam Mendes, the film stands as a companion piece to his American Beauty. Both films manage to be quite beautiful and miserable at the same time.
