Essentially repeating the formula of his Liar, Liar, Jim Carrey plays a man who, after attending a self-help seminar, must say yes to all challenges that come his way. That means if a homeless person asks for all his money, or an elderly woman offers up sexual favors, he must say yes. This provides for minimal laughter as Carrey strains with the physical humor. He has a couple of good moments—most notably a physical stunt involving a fall and a waitress tray—but the movie never really catches fire. Zooey Deschanel plays the love interest, a little young for the 46-year-old Carrey, who is beginning to look his age. She gets a couple of chances to sing, and that’s always a good thing. Rhys Darby of Flight of the Conchords has some funny moments as Carrey’s coworker, as does Bradley Cooper as his best friend. Ultimately, the plot feels too cookie-cutter to be appreciated, and a flailing Carrey can’t overcome it.
